Protectionism?

Given the challenge that Zimbabwean industries face due to stiff competition from South Africa and China, is protectionism a good idea to promote local. The abundance of Zimbabwe can never be explored unless production and trade are promoted and given that the majority of the products that line Zimbabwean supermarket shelves and street markets emerge from these two powerful economies (mainly), should we not protect our own producers through protectionism?
